Brainwave Entrainment Audio: Using Sound to Support Meditation, Relaxation, and Expanded Awareness
Brainwave entrainment audio uses carefully structured rhythms, tones, and sound patterns to encourage the brain toward patterns of activity associated with particular states of consciousness. Depending on the audio program and the listener’s intention, these states may include focused attention, deep relaxation, meditation, sleep preparation, creative insight, or expanded awareness.
One of the best-known forms of auditory stimulation is the binaural beat. A binaural beat is created when two tones with slightly different frequencies are presented separately to each ear through stereo headphones. The brain perceives the difference between those tones as a subtle rhythmic pulse. For example, if one ear receives a 200-hertz tone and the other receives a 207-hertz tone, the listener perceives a seven-hertz beat.
This perceived rhythm falls within the range of naturally occurring brainwave activity. The theory behind brainwave entrainment is that rhythmic sensory stimulation may influence—or help organize—neural activity through a process sometimes called a frequency-following response. However, binaural beats are only one type of auditory stimulation, and the relationship between a perceived beat and measurable changes in brain activity is more complex than many popular descriptions suggest.

The strongest evidence currently concerns short-term anxiety and relaxation. A meta-analysis of 22 studies found an overall beneficial effect of binaural-beat exposure on anxiety, cognition, and pain perception. The results also suggested that frequency, listening duration, and whether the audio was used before or during an activity could influence its effects.
Clinical studies have reported reduced anxiety among people listening to binaural-beat audio before or during medical and dental procedures. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials also found reductions in perioperative anxiety and pain, although the researchers noted substantial differences among the studies.
These findings suggest that auditory entrainment may be particularly useful as a simple, noninvasive addition to an existing relaxation, meditation, or stress-management practice.

Many people find it difficult to quiet mental activity when beginning meditation. Structured audio can provide the mind with a consistent sensory focus while guiding the listener through progressive stages of relaxation.
Brainwave entrainment does not “meditate for you,” but it may make it easier to settle the body, reduce distraction, and enter a receptive inner state. When paired with breathing, visualization, mindfulness, or guided meditation, it can become a useful form of supportive scaffolding—especially for people who struggle to reach deeper states through silent meditation alone.

Research has explored whether particular auditory-beat frequencies can influence attention, memory, creativity, and other aspects of cognition. The 2019 meta-analysis found an overall positive effect on cognitive outcomes, although results depended on the stimulation frequency, timing, and duration.
Earlier reviews have similarly described auditory-beat stimulation as promising for cognition and mood, but individual studies have not always produced consistent results. Brainwave entrainment audio is therefore better understood as a potentially helpful aid to focus or mental preparation—not as a guaranteed cognitive enhancer.

Slower rhythmic audio is frequently used to support relaxation before sleep. Some studies have reported improvements in perceived sleep quality, including an eight-week study involving athletes. More broadly, a systematic review of auditory stimulation and sleep found encouraging results across several types of sound, but concluded that the overall evidence was not yet strong enough to establish auditory stimulation as a treatment for sleep disorders.
For many listeners, the practical benefit may come from combining calming audio with a consistent evening ritual: lowering stimulation, relaxing the body, slowing the breath, and shifting attention away from the concerns of the day.

Several studies have found that binaural-beat audio may help reduce the subjective experience of pain, particularly in medical settings. In a randomized controlled trial involving cataract surgery, participants who listened to binaural-beat audio reported lower pain and anxiety and showed favorable changes in several physiological measures compared with a control group.
This does not mean that audio stimulation treats the underlying cause of pain. It may, however, help modify attention, emotional arousal, or the way discomfort is experienced. It should be used as a complementary practice rather than as a replacement for medical evaluation or treatment.
